Summary

Anaphylaxis is an acute systemic hypersensitivity reaction that can be fatal. In the United States the lifetime prevalence of anaphylaxis is approximately 5%. Convincing food allergy affects an estimated 10.8% of adults and 7.6% of children, and 24.0% of food-allergic adults and 40.7% of food-allergic children report a current epinephrine prescription. Case fatality was 0.25% to 0.33% among hospitalizations or emergency department presentations with anaphylaxis as the principal diagnosis, corresponding to 63 to 99 deaths per year, while multiple-cause death certificate data give 186 to 225 deaths per year. The annual economic cost of food allergy in the United States was estimated at $24.8 billion, of which $4.3 billion was direct medical cost. These estimates come from different data sources and populations and should not be combined as though they described one cohort.
